Mutual Materials Newcastle Lot 4 Cr

Facility Site ID: 50608
Cleanup Site ID: 15081

Status

December 2020, Ecology determined the site meets cleanup standards. Ecology issued a No Further Action Letter.

Site Background

The Site was occupied by a former brick plant facility that used a portion of the property to store brick debris and brick products approximately between 1957 and 2011.  All the historical structures related to the brick plant were demolished and removed.  The Property is currently being developed with apartments and parking lots.

A Site investigation conducted in 2014 revealed that chromium contamination is present in the soil as a result of the former brick plant operations.

Site Cleanup In Process

In 2015, cleanup activities were conducted at the Site, which included characterization of the contamination, removal of the brick debris and impacted soil, off-Site disposal of the removed materials, and soil cleanup confirmation sampling.

Based on the Cleanup Action Report (October 1, 2019), the impacted soil with chromium exceeding the cleanup level was completely removed and disposed off-Site.  However, it is unknown if ground water is impacted as it has not been sampled. Ground water sampling must be conducted before Ecology is able to determine if further cleanup action is required at this Site.

Following Ecology’s recommendation dated February 19, 2020, Newcastle Joint Ventures conducted a study to assess presence of the groundwater at the Site.  The study report dated August 12, 2020 concluded that the groundwater proximately exists 30 feet below ground surface at this Site.  As a result, Ecology determined the groundwater was unlikely impacted by the contamination release from the surface.   Therefore, a NO Further Action letter was issued on December 1, 2020.
