Spokane Recycling
Site History
The Spokane Recycling site is a former Kaiser Aluminum smelter facility that operated from 1942 until 2000. Fifty acres of the 167-acre smelter property were placed on the National Priorities List (NPL) in 1983. Ecology oversees the Kaiser Mead NPL site cleanup, which is separate from the Spokane Recycling site that surrounds the NPL site. Spokane Recycling bought the smelter property in 2014.
In 2020, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency completed a partial cleanup of the Spokane Recycling site. Their cleanup focused on removing asbestos-containing building materials, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and waste piles and containers containing various contaminants. But more contamination remains, including PCBs, metals, and petroleum remaining in above- and underground storage tanks.
