Uptown Bakery
Site Background
The Site is located in the Queen Anne neighborhood, northwest of downtown Seattle. The Site is contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons in the gasoline, diesel and oil ranges, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes into the soil and groundwater. The source of that contamination has been attributed to petroleum releases on the nearby Queen Anne Properties (QAP) parcel and the a portion of the Site property related to the former Queen Anne Dye Works. Three underground storage tanks that contained ‘gasol’ were removed from the south side of the Site parcel in 1958. Soil and ground water analytical data and related chromatographic profiles indicated the presence of Stoddard solvent, a compound used historically in dry cleaning operations.
In 2010, soil vapor extraction was implemented as an interim cleanup action after a pilot test indicated that it would be effective on the Site. The cleanup action was conducted between December 6, 2010 and February 11, 2011. The objective of the interim action was to reduce concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons in the unsaturated zone through the volatilization and extraction of soil vapors and the introduction of oxygen to enhance biodegradation.
Hazardous Sites List
Model Toxics Control Act
cleanup law. It provides requirements for contaminated site cleanup and sets
standards that protect human health and the environment. Ecology enacts the
MTCA and oversees cleanups.
The MTCA site cleanup process is completed in steps over a variable timeline.
