Removal From Contaminated Sites List
We held a public comment period from June 15 to July 17, 2017. We didn't receive any comments.
Ecology removed this site from the Contaminated Sites list.
Site Background And Cleanup
This former landfill operated from 1941 to 1989. It was constructed without a base liner or leachate collection system (now a standard practice). A leachate collection system drains the liquid generated from a landfill into an area for disposal.
Only residential trash and sewage sludge was dumped at the facility. However, we tested for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals to determine if any hazardous waste was dumped at the site. We did not find any evidence of hazardous waste. However, we did find that some chlorinated solvents leaked into the groundwater. Drinking water is not affected.
When the landfill closed in 1989, it was capped with an engineered cover liner and protective layer of clean soil. This site was cleaned up under Ecology’s Voluntary Cleanup Program. With Ecology’s oversight, LRI cleaned up this site by:
- Monitoring groundwater and landfill gas since 1985.
- Studying the site thoroughly to find the extent of the contamination.
- Ensuring that people would not be exposed to contamination through groundwater or soil vapors.
- Re-analyzing recent groundwater samples with a more precise method to make sure contamination was below cleanup levels.
Voluntary Cleanup Program
This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.
Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
