Pops Automotive Roloff Property

Cleanup Site ID:

Site Description
In 1993, contamination in drinking water supplied to three homes was traced to a gasoline spill in soil in an area adjacent to the former Pops’ Automotive Roloff property in Everett. Ecology issued Enforcement Order No. DE 93TC-N325 in January 1994, requiring several emergency actions to protect residents. This included replacing the affected water lines and remediating contaminated soil. Ecology added the property to the Hazardous Site Listing in 1994.
Records show that the area of contaminated soil was initially fenced off. Soil appears to have been successfully remediated in 1994. In February to March 1994, the contaminated soil was excavated, confirmation samples were taken, the old water pipes replaced with new pipes, and the excavation backfilled with clean soil. The remedial action was witnessed by Department of Ecology personnel.
On June 13, 2008, confirmation sampling of groundwater was conducted in order to assess any potential remaining groundwater impacts after the soil remediation and water line replacement in 1994. Confirmation sampling showed that the water samples were below state cleanup levels for groundwater for gasoline and its associated chemicals.
Ecology has concluded from a review of records and recent groundwater samples that the remediation work at this site satisfied the provisions of the 1994 Enforcement Order and therefore no further action is needed.
