Site Background

The Site is located at the intersection of SE 268th Street and 225th Place SE in Maple Valley.  It is approximately seven acres in size.  The Site is bordered by single-family residences to the north, east, and west, and by undeveloped land to the south.  It used to be undeveloped land, and currently is being developed into single-family homes.

Petroleum odors were noted in the upper five feet in the area of construction equipment storage and truck fueling during a geotechnical investigation for Site development in February 2005.  Results from a subsurface investigation conducted by Farallon Consulting in October 2005 further confirmed soil containing concentrations of diesel and oil exceeding the MTCA Method A clean up levels.  It was believed that the source of the release was construction/demolition equipment refueling and storage at the Site.

Cleanup Conducted

Approximately 190 tons of petroleum contaminated soil was excavated and disposed of at an off-site facility.  Groundwater was not encountered during the excavation. Soil confirmation samples showed compliance with the MTCA Method A cleanup levels for unrestricted land use. 

Contaminants Of Concern

·         Total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel, total petroleum hydrocarbons as oil into the soil.

Voluntary Cleanup Program

This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.

Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
