Ecology and US Environmental Protection Agency worked with US Department of Energy to clean up the 1100 Area National Priorities List (NPL) Site, located in the southern portion of the Hanford Site, Benton County.
The 1100 Area contained four Operable Units (OUs): 1100-EM-l , 1100-EM-2, 1100-EM-3, and 1100-IU-l. The remedial actions selected for the 1100 Area OUs have been completed; the 1100 Area was deleted from the NPL List in 1996. The Horn Rapids Landfill (1100-EM-1 OU) was used for asbestos disposal and still contains asbestos after closure in accordance with the asbestos regulations. As long as asbestos (a hazardous substance) remains at the landfill site and prevents the property from being released for unlimited use or unrestricted exposure, the landfill will be included in CERCLA 5-year reviews.
