Glacier Northwest Inc

Glacier Northwest, Inc. is the current owner of the property that was formerly operated by Reichhold, Inc., a chemical product manufacturer and distributor.

• 1913 to 1922: The upland portion of the property was filled with material from the initial dredging and straightening of the LDW.
• 1936 to 1939: Mineralized-Cell Wood Preserving Company leased a portion of the property from King County and treated logs using a solution that contained copper, arsenic, and zinc on the southern portion of the property.
• 1940 to 1944: Activated charcoal (for use in gas masks) was manufactured and tested by Carlisle Lumber Company and subsequently Crown Zellerbach Corporation under contract to and oversight by the U.S. Army. The Army purchased the upland portion of the property in 1943. 
• 1946 to 1961: Reichhold, Inc. leased the land from the Army and used the property for chemical manufacturing, including  resins, glues, formaldehyde, pentachlorophenol, and sodium pentachlorophenate at various times during its operations. 
• 1964: The Port of Seattle purchased the property and leased it to Kaiser Cement Corp, who was obligated to redevelop the property for storage and distribution of cement. Kaiser redeveloped the property, and the cement storage and distrubtion terminal opened around 1968 or 1969. 
• 1968/69 – today: The property has primarily been used as a cement storage and distribution terminal under various property owners and operators, and the southern portion of the property has been intermittently leased for equipment storage to other entities. The property has been owned by Glacier Northwest, Inc. since 1991. 

In 2009, we entered into an agreed order with Glacier Northwest, Inc. and Reichhold, Inc. (the potentially liable persons or PLPs) to investigate contamination at the site. This investigation is called a remedial investigation. This investigation found the following primary contaminants of potential concern that may require cleanup: 

• Soil: metals (arsenic, copper, zinc, tributyltin), semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs -  Pentachlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, hexachlorobenzene, bis(2-ethythexyl) phthalate, phenol), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins/furans, total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as diesel and/or motor oil, and carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (cPAHs)
• Groundwater: metals, SVOCs, PCBs, dioxins/furans, TPH, cPAHs
• Sediments: metals, SVOCs, PCBs, dioxins/furans, TPH, cPAHs
