Yakima City Fire Department
Facility Site ID:
54517643
Cleanup Site ID:
6257
Site Description
The Site currently operates as a fire station for the City of Yakima. In 1997, two underground storage tanks (USTs) that stored petroleum products were removed from the Site.
During the removal, soil samples were taken from the UST excavation pit and from beneath the fuel dispensers. Most sampling results showed contamination below state cleanup levels. However, one surface sample taken from under the dispensers revealed diesel contamination. The contaminated soil was not removed as it would have affected the structural integrity of the fire station building. The excavation was backfilled with imported fill material and the site was restored to match surrounding conditions.
Over time, petroleum contamination will degrade naturally into non-toxic components. In 2016, updated sampling did not show any soil contamination above state cleanup standards. Therefore, it has been determined this site does not pose a threat to human health or the environment.
Based upon cleanup activities conducted at the Site, the Yakima City Fire Department was removed from the Hazardous Sites List in October 2018.
