Initial Investigation

When Ecology receives information that a property may pose a threat to human health or the environment, an Initial Investigation is conducted. This information may come to Ecology from the owner of the property making a required notification, or may come in the form of a complaint, through the Environmental Report Tracking System. The goal of this investigation is to determine if there was a release that requires further action.

During the course of an Initial Investigation, the property owner may conduct (or hire an environmental contractor to conduct) an independent remediation. This option is allowed under the Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA) regulations, and is verified by an Ecology staff member through review of the required analytical information.

No Further Action

This site has gone through the Initial Investigation process and has been given a No Further Action due to independent remediation. The site owner has submitted documentation to Ecology showing that a cleanup has occurred and there is no remaining contamination above the applicable state (Model Toxics Control Act Method A) cleanup levels.
