Country Store
Site History
The Country Store site has been a gas station since the early 1980s. There are two buildings on the site, the Country Store and a restaurant. The site contained seven underground storage tanks (USTs): two 4,000-gallon diesel, a 6,000-gallon gasoline, an 8,000-gallon gasoline, and three 10,000-gallon gasoline tanks.
Independent cleanup began in 1990, when petroleum-contaminated soil (PCS) was discovered during a site assessment. The seven USTs and approximately 700 cubic yards of PCS were excavated. The PCS was treated offsite using bioremediation, and the excavation was backfilled with the treated soil after new USTs were installed.
Four groundwater monitoring wells were installed in 1992–1993 and sampled quarterly until 2009. At this time, groundwater from three of the four wells met Washington drinking water standards for four consecutive quarters, so these wells no longer needed sampling. As of August 2011, the remaining well contained gasoline levels still requiring cleanup.
In May 2010, a Site Hazard Assessment was conducted, and the site was ranked 4 and added to the Hazardous Sites List (HSL). One is the highest level of risk, and five is the lowest.
In 2017, the site entered Ecology's Voluntary Cleanup Program and resumed groundwater monitoring. The final well was clean in June 2019. We then issued a no further action letter explaining how cleanup was completed and removed the site from the HSL.
Voluntary Cleanup Program
This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.
Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
