Sunnyside Municipal Airport Pesticide Spray Shed

Ecology received a complaint in October 2008 reporting an old pesticide spray storage shed had been torn down and chemicals had been dumped at the Site.
 
Limited soil sampling conducted in June 2010 by Ecology staff confirmed the presence of several chemicals used as pesticides, and degradation products, at levels above what is considered protective of human health and the environment.  The sampling took place in the vicinity of the spray shed.  The chemicals identified include toxaphene, dieldrin, Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), and Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE).

As the owner of the Site, the City of Sunnyside has been officially named as a “potentially liable person.” 

Ecology and the City of Sunnyside entered into an Agreed Order for conducting a Remedial Investigation (RI) at the Site to gather more information about how much contamination is present.  The RI consisted of the installation of three wells to monitor groundwater, as well as soil and groundwater sampling. Pesticide, herbicide, and petroleum contamination was found above state cleanup levels in both soil and groundwater.  The final Remedial Investigation Report was submitted in December 2014.

In July 2015, Ecology amended the Agreed Order to include completing a Feasibility Study, which describes cleanup options, timeframes, and costs, and a draft Cleanup Action Plan, which describes the chosen cleanup for the Site.
