The Hardel Mutual Plywood (Hardel) site is located at 1210 West Bay Drive NW in Olympia. From 1924 – 1996 the site was used for logging and lumber businesses. Hardel ceased operations at the site after a fire severely damaged buildings.

Past business activities contaminated soil and groundwater at the site. Contaminants included heavy oil and diesel petroleum hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

In 2007, Ecology and Hardel signed an Agreed Order (legal agreement) requiring Hardel to investigate and clean up the site.

Cleanup at this site is now complete!

While investigating the site, Hardel found that some contamination was moving toward Budd Inlet. This posed an immediate threat to the environment, so Hardel proposed an interim action (partial cleanup). In 2010 Ecology held a public comment period and approved the interim action.

After completing the interim action, Hardel sampled groundwater for one year. They found no contaminants above cleanup levels.

In 2012, Ecology held comment periods the final cleanup plan and the decision to remove Hardel Mutual Plywood from the Hazardous Sites List
