Terrace Heights Landfill Pesticide Dump

This site is located at the eastern end of the Terrace Heights Landfill. In January 1994, while excavating for cell expansion, an unknown quantity of yellow solid powdery material and old pesticide cans labeled Krenite were discovered about 4 feet below ground surface. Krenite (4,6 dinitro cresol sodium salt) was used as dormant spray to control pests.

After a Site Hazard Assessment conducted in 1994, the Site was ranked a “5” on the Hazardous Sites List. Later adjustments to the rankings resulted in an updated hazard ranking of "4" on the List.  The Hazardous Sites List is a statewide list of contaminated properties.  Sites can be ranked from a “1” to “5”.  A rank of “1” is the highest level of environmental concern compared to other sites on the List, and a rank of “5” is the lowest.

About 600 tons of contaminated soil was excavated and disposed of offsite. Several soil samples were collected and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The results revealed no contamination remained above state cleanup levels.

Ecology has determined the cleanup actions performed at the site were successful and no further action is warranted.
