There were residential homes at this site from 1911 to 1968 and a restaurant between 1976 and 2005. In 2008, during the construction of an office building, the owners discovered three dry wells (an underground chamber to help collect rain and groundwater). Although these wells were empty, we found some metals contamination (chromium, lead, and mercury) and diesel in the soil at the bottom of the wells.

In 2008, during the office building construction the dry wells were capped (filled with concrete). Then the building foundation was placed on top. This site was cleaned up under Ecology’s Voluntary Cleanup Program. We believe that this site doesn’t pose a risk to human health and the environment because:

  • There is no ability to directly contact the contaminated soil
  • The contamination does not affect groundwater

Voluntary Cleanup Program

This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.

Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
