Interlake Grocery
For several decades, a gas station has operated on this property. During that time, gasoline leaked from underground storage tanks into soil and groundwater on the site.
In 1992, workers removed underground storage tanks and pipes that carried fuel. The property owners worked with Ecology under the Voluntary Cleanup Program to remove about 200 cubic yards of contaminated soil, and begin a monitoring program for the groundwater.
Tests showed that the groundwater was clean after this soil removal. However, some contaminated soil remained under a building, so an environmental covenant was placed on the site. This covenant restricts activities and development to prevent accidental exposure to the contaminated soil remaining on site.
Soil tests in 2016 showed that the contamination in the soil no longer posed a threat to people or the environment. Ecology determined that no further cleanup action was necessary and removed the environmental covenant.
Voluntary Cleanup Program
This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.
Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
