| Description | This memo summarizes the results of groundwater modeling conducted in support of site investigation activities at the Alexander Farms Site near Grandview, Washington. An existing groundwater model was used to help predict the potential aquifer response to proposed changes in local hydraulic conditions. Two changes were evaluated: (1) a proposal to line a portion of the Sunnyside Irrigation District (SID) canal adjacent to the site to eliminate canal leakage, and (2) a proposal to reduce recharge through site soils by covering a large area of the site with a low permeability tarp. The modeling results indicated that elimination of leakage by lining the SID canal in the vicinity of the site would eliminate the mounding effect seen below the canal in the original model. The results also indicated that the placement of a low permeability cover on the site would have little or not effect on subsurface hydraulic conditions. (The model does not address changes that may occur in contaminant travel times or pathlines within the vadose zone.) The pdf copy of this memo is in black & white.
