Description In 1998, Washington became the first state in the nation to adopt standards for metals in fertilizers. Two years later cadmium-contamination was discovered in zinc sulfate used as an ingredient in fertilizer from China. Without these standards in place, workers may have been exposed to cadmium and our farmlands could have become contaminated. This information is to further educate and inform citizens, fertilizer manufacturers, and regulatory agencies in other states about the potential for contamination of fertilizer products and to help prevent similar occurrences in the future.
