Description Methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) is a volatile oxygen-containing organic compound which is added to gasoline to promote a more complete combustion, thereby reducing air pollution and enhancing octane rating. Widespread use of this chemical has resulted in frequent detection of MTBE in groundwater throughout the United States.
