Description In 1989, soil and groundwater beneath the Black Lake Grocery was found to be contaminated with petroleum products from leaking underground tanks. In November 2004, remediation was completed. Black Lake, adjacent to the site, was never evaluated for impacts.

In March 2005, the Department of Ecology conducted a study to evaluate sediment and water downgradient of the site. Samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and lead. Only low concentrations of PAHs and lead were detected in sediments, at two to three orders of magnitude below levels considered to affect aquatic infauna.
