Description | Two previous Ecology studies have reported levels of PCBs and 4,4’-DDE (a DDT metabolite) in Vancouver Lake fish, with a mix of high and low results. This 2005-06 study analyzed fish tissue and surface sediments for PCBs, chlorinated pesticides, and dioxins/furans from Vancouver Lake and the nearby Lake River. Levels of PCBs, 4,4’-DDE, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), dieldrin, and toxaphene were elevated in fish. Only 4 of 186 total analyses for sediment samples were reported above detection limits. Recommendations include (1) addressing PCBs and 2,3,7,8-TCDD through a statewide assessment, and (2) conducting a surface water quality study to verify fish tissue concentrations and determine where fish collected for the study reside. |
