Whatcom Lake Dam is located in Whatcom County, 2 miles east of downtown Bellingham, within
T 38 N, R 3 E, Section 28. The dam is located at the west end of Lake Whatcom where the lake
outflows into Whatcom Creek. The primary purpose of the dam is to regulate lake water levels in Lake Whatcom. Lake Whatcom is the raw water source for Bellingham’s municipal water supply. At the spillway overflow elevation of 308.7 feet, the lake has a surface area of 5,000 acres and a
natural (inactive) storage volume of 700,000 acre-feet. The dam was constructed in 1937.
