Description In 2005, the Washington State Legislature established funding for a Freshwater Algae Control Program and tasked the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) with program development. RCW 43.21A.667 directs Ecology to submit a biennial report to the appropriate legislative committees about actions taken to implement this program. This report covers activities from 2008 and 2009. The Freshwater Algae Program Report provides information about each program element and summarizes information about toxic algae blooms. Program elements include:

Toxicity testing for blue-green algae blooms.

Identification of algal blooms in Washington waters.

A publically- assessable web-based database to post algal identification and toxicity testing results.

Partnership with the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) for health related information about toxic blooms.

Ecology and DOH websites with information about freshwater algae, management methods, and human and pet health risks of toxic blue-green algae.

A small grants program to fund freshwater algae control projects.
