| Description | As part of the Urban Waters Initiative, Ecology’s Environmental Assessment Program is assessing sediment quality throughout selected urban bays in Puget Sound. These bay-scale assessments inform environmental managers how conditions have changed bay-wide over time. This publication is a 4-page summary of the results. The full report is linked below under Related Publications. In 2008, sediment samples were taken at random locations throughout Commencement Bay. Comparisons with similar data from 1999 show bay-scale decreases in sediment contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and metals, but increases in phthalate contamination. Benthic invertebrate community health improved in the waterways but deteriorated in the central-southeastern bay. |
