Description Washington’s Children’s Safe Products Act was passed in 2008. It gave Ecology the authority to identify and prioritize toxic chemicals in children’s products. Ecology has identified a draft list of chemicals of high concern and is now making rules to carry out the data collection portion of the law. When these rules take effect, manufacturers will report to Ecology on the amount of these chemicals contained in the children’s products they make.

Ecology is seeking additional legislative authority to spur the use of safer alternatives and promote safer design of children’s products. The best way to reduce the risk caused by use of toxic chemicals in children’s products is to require manufacturers to search for safer alternatives to these chemicals, and encourage them to use these safer alternatives when they are found.

Ecology’s proposal

The proposed amendments to the Children’s Safe Product Act will give Ecology the tools and authorities to act on the information it receives in reports from manufacturers.
