Description | The Department of Ecology collected and analyzed plant, soil biota, and soil samples from 25 locations in the Tacoma Smelter Plume footprint and 11 locations in Old Orchards at the Hanford Site. Samples were analyzed for arsenic and lead; a sub-set of soil samples were also analyzed for arsenic species, copper, and bioassay success. Based on these data, soil screening levels for ecological risk were developed to address historic arsenic and lead contamination in these areas. Other issues explored by this study were (1) the use of arsenic species vs. total arsenic for soil screening levels, and (2) the influence of soil and plant type on the uptake of arsenic and lead by plants and soil biota. | ||||
