Description Asarco Settlement Update and Cleanup Plans. In 2009, the state of Washington received a settlement from Asarco for environmental damage from its mining and smelting operations in Ruston. Ecology is currently moving forward with existing programs to clean up child play areas and provide outreach and education through the Dirt Alert program. Ecology is working on an Interim Action Plan for cleaning up part of the Tacoma Smelter Plume. This update describes current work funded by the settlement and future cleanup plans.
