Description | The Department of Ecology has developed a quantitative Marine Water Condition Index (MWCI). The MWCI reports shifting baseline conditions and significant long-term trends in 12 water quality indicators relative to a historic reference period, 1999 to 2008. The index yearly reports on conditions in the greater Puget Sound region, Willapa Bay, and Grays Harbor. A modular structure of the index allows insight into specific aspects of estuarine water quality specific to eutrophication. The MWCI revealed significant decreases in water quality from 1999 to 2008, suggesting that eutrophication processes along the urban corridor of Puget Sound continue to grow. |
