Description Sediment quality from South Puget Sound and Budd Inlet samples collected in 2011 were characterized based on results of 130 chemical analyses and two toxicity tests. South Sound sediment quality was also compared with 1999 baseline conditions. Results were summarized with the Washington State Department of Ecology’s Sediment Chemistry Index and Sediment Toxicity Index values.

Regional Chemistry Index values for both 1999 and 2011, and for Budd Inlet, all surpassed the target value set for this indicator by the Puget Sound Partnership, indicating high sediment quality with respect to contaminants. Regional Chemistry Index values did not differ significantly between years. The value for Budd Inlet was slightly lower in 2011 than that for the region.

Toxicity increased significantly region-wide from 3% of area in 1999 to 52% of area in 2011. In Budd Inlet, the Toxicity Index values categorized 93% area as toxic.

This poster was presented at the 2012 South Puget Sound Science Symposium, October 30, 2012, in Shelton, WA.
