| Description | In 2007, the Washington State Department of Ecology surveyed surface sediment conditions throughout the Whidbey Basin and compared them to results from a similar survey conducted with the same methods in 1997. Sediment condition was assessed using four indices of sediment contamination, toxicity to laboratory animals, sediment-dwelling invertebrate communities, and combined Sediment Quality Triad Index. Overall, sediment quality in the Whidbey Basin did not change significantly over this ten-year period. However, there were significant changes in several individual parameters. This report gives the primary results of the 2007 survey and comparisons to the 1997 survey, all of Puget Sound, and the Puget Sound Partnership's “Vital Signs” indicator targets.
