Description In 2009, the Washington State Department of Ecology surveyed surface sediment conditions throughout the Bainbridge Basin and compared them to results from a similar survey conducted with the same methods in 1998. Sediment condition was assessed using four indices of sediment contamination, toxicity to laboratory animals, sediment-dwelling invertebrate communities (benthos), and combined Sediment Quality Triad Index. Overall sediment quality in the Bainbridge Basin declined significantly over this 11-year period, due to increased toxicity and adversely affected benthos.

This report gives the primary results of the 2009 survey and comparisons to the 1998 survey, all of Puget Sound, and the Puget Sound Partnership's “Vital Signs” indicator targets. Data and supporting information are available on Ecology's website linked under "Web Page" below.
