Description In Washington rivers and streams, the state sets minimum acceptable values for dissolved oxygen (DO) levels and an acceptable range of values for pH. Values below these criteria can be influenced by natural processes and human activities. Low DO and pH levels have occurred in the Salmon Creek watershed, located northeast of Vancouver, Washington.

This 2011-12 study characterized DO and pH levels and investigated the influence of natural processes. The study found multiple DO and temperature problems, but only one small stream with pH issues. In several areas, DO problems are partly due to temperatures problems at the same location. The lowest pH levels occurred during winter rains, likely due to the natural acidity of rain, combined with other natural factors.
