Description | In 2008 and 2009, the Washington State Department of Ecology surveyed surface sediment conditions throughout Central Puget Sound and compared them to results from a similar survey conducted with the same methods in 1998-1999. Sediment condition was assessed using four indices of sediment contamination, toxicity to laboratory animals, sediment-dwelling invertebrate communities (benthos), and combined Sediment Quality Triad Index. Overall sediment quality in Central Puget Sound declined significantly over this 10-year period, due to adversely affected benthos and increased low-level toxicity. This report gives the primary results of the 2008-2009 survey and comparisons to the 1998-1999 survey, all of Puget Sound, and the Puget Sound Partnership's “Vital Signs” indicator targets.
