Description | Twenty-four lakes in Washington State were sampled for largemouth and smallmouth bass and water chemistry parameters during 2005-2009 to evaluate trends in mercury concentrations. We analyzed spatial patterns in bass mercury levels across a gradient of land and climate types, lake chemistry parameters, and physical watershed characteristics in order to identify factors influencing mercury bioaccumulation. Across the state, bass mercury levels followed rainfall patterns and were statistically higher on the coastal west side of the state and lower in the drier eastern region. Results indicated that annual watershed precipitation and lake alkalinity were the most important variables explaining bass mercury levels throughout the study lakes.
