The Spokane River contains elevated levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). PCBs build up in the food chain and remain in the environment long after they are first introduced. PCBs can cause adverse health effects in humans and wildlife, including cancer and harm to immune, nervous, and reproductive systems. Very low levels of PCBs are found nearly everywhere in the environment. The Spokane River Regional Toxics Task Force (Task Force) wants to use a new approach for improving water quality and achieving water quality goals. To accomplish these goals, the Task Force needs funding to evaluate and implement priority actions to control the sources of PCBs. |
