Description | During February-April 2013, the Department of Ecology (Ecology) collected runoff from 18 constructed roofing panels during 10 rain events for contaminant analysis. Ecology identified statistically significant higher concentrations of three metals in runoff from several roofing types when compared to the glass control panels. Most notably, concentrations of total arsenic, copper, and zinc were significantly higher in the following roofing types compared to controls: treated wood shakes (arsenic and copper), copper (copper), Zincalume® (zinc), and EPDM (zinc). New roofing materials in this study did not leach PAHs or PBDEs to the runoff. With one exception (treated wood shake roof), new roofing materials did not leach phthalates. Ecology compared concentrations of metals in runoff found in the present study with literature values. | ||||
