Description In 2011, sediment samples were collected for PCDD/Fs analyses in Budd Inlet and Oakland Bay to compare with previous results and to fill data gaps.

Most results had elevated PCDD/Fs levels (>4.0 ng/kg TEQ), ranging from 0.692 to 55.2 ng/kg TEQ. No clear pattern was found comparing the 0-2 cm samples to the lower portions in either bay. Background levels were not clearly defined, although Budd Inlet exhibits a strong decreasing trend from south to north and a less clear trend increasing from west to east. Sediment deposited in Oakland Bay has been found to stay confined within the bay.

Research is needed to understand hydraulic energy, sediment deposition/resuspension, local disturbances, and potential ongoing sources in the distribution and fate of PCDD/F.
