Description | In 2012, the Washington State Department of Ecology surveyed surface sediment conditions throughout the San Juan Islands and compared them to results from a similar survey conducted with the same methods in 2002 and 2003. Sediment condition was assessed using four indices of sediment contamination, toxicity to laboratory animals, sediment-dwelling invertebrate communities (benthos), and combined Sediment Quality Triad Index. Overall sediment quality was high and remained largely unchanged from 2002-2003 to 2012. This report gives the primary results of the 2012 survey and comparisons to the 2002-2003 survey, all of Puget Sound, and the Puget Sound Partnership's “Vital Signs” indicator targets. Data and supporting information are available on Ecology's Marine Sediment Monitoring website linked below. |
