Description | During 2013 and 2014, the Department of Ecology (Ecology) collected runoff from 18 constructed roofing panels during 20 rain events for contaminant analysis. Ecology identified significantly higher metals concentrations in runoff from several roofing materials than from the controls. Notably, treated wood shakes released arsenic and copper, copper roofing released copper, PVC released arsenic, and Zincalume® and EPDM released zinc. Metals concentrations decreased significantly for some material over the year-long study. Roofing materials evaluated generally did not leach organics to runoff. Ecology compared metals concentrations from this study with literature values. Metals in roof runoff depend on factors such as roofing material composition, age, slope, as well as climatic conditions. Application of runoff concentrations measured in this study to estimate basin-wide releases should be undertaken cautiously. | ||||
