Description | Asotin Creek is currently designated a Category 5 waterbody for fecal coliform bacteria (FC), indicating a need for a TMDL study. Although much work had been completed to eliminate pollution, exceedances to Washington State water quality standards for FC continue. It was postulated that failing on-site sewage systems were responsible for these exceedances. If these sources could be isolated and remediated, the existing Category 5 listings could qualify for designation into Category 4b, eliminating the need for a TMDL study. In 2011, Ecology sampled sites during low-flow conditions. Parameters were flow, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, FC, enterococci bacteria, chloride, and nitrate/nitrite nitrogen. Results indicated (1) no significant FC pollution sources in the lowest reaches of Asotin Creek and (2) FC continues to exceed (not meet) water quality standards in the Asotin Creek and George Creek watersheds. |
