Description Puget Sound is a productive fjord with phytoplankton peaking in spring and fall. In recent years, phytoplankton peaks preceded large Noctiluca blooms which imply eutrophication.

We explore conditions during Noctiluca blooms and contrast them with little to no Noctiluca observations. Sensors on a ferry vessel continuously measure near-surface water along a transect between Seattle, Washington and Victoria, B.C. Data are compared with monthly samples of nutrients from nearby stations.

We examine phytoplankton events in 2011, 2012, and 2015. Some events coincide with the end of Noctiluca blooms. Results will be used to define conditions that may contribute to Noctiluca blooms.
