Description | This document describes two screening tools (developed at Ecology) for quickly assessing channel migration potential. The first tool is a GIS data layer called the Channel Migration Potential (CHAMP) layer, which contains a classification of channel migration potential for stream networks of Western Washington. The second component describes channel characteristics visible in aerial imagery that indicate active channel migration. Visual assessment of channels helps refine the initial broad-scale assessments of channel migration potential using the CHAMP data layer. Together, these tools help plan and prioritize floodplain management actions such as Channel Migration Zone mapping, erosion risk reduction, and floodplain restoration.
NOTES | A zip file containing the CHAMP data layer is included as an attachment. The layer can also be downloaded from the Ecology GIS data page: http://www.ecy.wa.gov/services/gis/data/data.htm
