Description The purpose of this investigation is to provide insights into the potential impacts of domestic permit-exempt well use within Washington. In this study, we evaluate rates of well construction, and compare the relative water consumption by permit-exempt domestic wells with other consumptive uses. Our statewide and county-by-county analyses will help frame the Department of Ecology’s (Ecology’s) discussion on how to regulate permit-exempt domestic wells in the future. This study does not evaluate how consumptive water use by permit-exempt domestic wells actually affects streamflows, nor other hydrologic impacts from rural development such as altered streamflow resulting from land cover changes.
