| Description | Concerns regarding the vapor intrusion pathway have added great challenges to the way we do cleanup at contaminated sites. Because there are many variables affecting the characterization of this pathway, a multiple lines of evidence approach is often recommended. In 2015, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) updated their 2002 vapor intrusion guidance by developing two documents: the Technical Guide for Addressing Petroleum Vapor Intrusion at Leaking Underground Storage Tank Sites and the OSWER Technical Guide for Assessing and Mitigating the Vapor Intrusion Pathway from Subsurface Vapor Sources to Indoor Air. The Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) is also in the process of developing a revised policy for evaluation of vapor intrusion from petroleum compounds based on EPA’s new guidance. The revised EPA and Ecology policies have affected the evaluation and cleanup of contaminated sites, particularly when contaminants of concern vary. Multiple cleanup sites with vapor intrusion concerns were reviewed and the approaches used at each site for characterization and remedy selection were compared, including sites with petroleum and chlorinated solvents. A list of the most important lessons learned, recommendations, and additional guidance to follow for site characterization and cleanup are provided. |
