Description Flood retention facilities on the upper Chehalis River have been proposed as part of the Chehalis Basin Strategy. One design would create a permanent reservoir for flood retention and flow augmentation (FRFA). This report reviewed research regarding factors in reservoirs that may increase rates of mercury bioaccumulation. To assess that risk, the report evaluates the characteristics of the proposed reservoir and reviews mercury data from lakes and reservoirs in Washington State. Results suggest that, if built, the FRFA reservoir would be conducive to mercury methylation and bioaccumulation, which could reach levels higher than found in other waterbodies in western Washington, particularly in the short-term. Recommendations are offered for future studies to increase understanding of methyl mercury in reservoirs.
