Description | Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are a diverse group of algae with a variety of life histories and habitat niches. Some species are capable of producing toxins (collectively called cyanotoxins) that are harmful to humans and wildlife. In this study, we will investigate the presence and persistence of cyanotoxins in shoreline sediments during and following a cyanobacterial bloom. In addition, the pigments present in cyanobacteria can accumulate in the deeper sediments of lakes. We will collect a deep sediment core to measure how cyanobacterial communities have changed over time in a lake that experiences annual cyanobacterial blooms. | ||||
