| Description | The Riffe Lake/ Kosmos Flats site is located on the eastern bank of Rainey Creek near Champion Haul Road southeast of Morton, Washington, near Riffe Lake. The surrounding land and water are used for recreational activities such as boating, camping and a hang-gliding landing area. In April 2019, the Department of Ecology was notified about contamination found in the area of the former Kosmos sawmill. Ecology is directing Tacoma Power, the Potentially Liable Party to conduct a remedial investigation, and prepare a feasibility study and a preliminary cleanup action plan for the site. These cleanup reports will address the contaminants, which include bunker C oil, diesel, gasoline, and heavy oil. These chemicals can be harmful to human health and the environment. Tacoma Power has closed access to the site until cleanup is complete. |
