Description The main goal of this study is to assess the use of biofilms as a tool for tracing sources of PFAS in surface waters. In previous Department of Ecology (Ecology) studies, biofilms have been demonstrated to be a useful environmental tool for (1) measuring and tracing contaminants such as PCBs, PBDEs, and metals, and (2) understanding impacts to organisms at higher trophic levels. However, we have not conducted a field study to test the use of biofilms for measuring PFAS.

Our field location for this 2021 study is the South Fork Palouse River, where previous Ecology studies have shown high concentraptions of PFAS in the surface water. We will collect biofilm and water samples at 11 locations on the river, as well as sediment at a subset of 4 locations, in order to compare PFAS in these matrices.
