Description This guidance is intended for people and companies that are responsible for investigating and cleaning up PFAS contamination.

PFAS are per- and polyfluorinated compounds that consist of thousands of unique synthetic organic chemicals that are extremely stable and persistent in the environment. This guidance provides information and direction on:

* Known PFAS impacts across Washington * Soil and groundwater cleanup levels * Sampling options for PFAS compounds * Approaches to minimize cross-contamination * Protective concentrations for ecological receptors * Field demonstrated treatment technologies.

Background: The Washington State Department of Ecology works to prevent and clean up contamination that can threaten human health and the environment. We do this work under Washington’s environmental cleanup law called the Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA). In June 2022, we concluded that PFAS compounds fall under MTCA and any PFAS releases need to be assessed for cleanup. This guidance gives potentially liable persons, cleanup project managers, and consultants a practical approach for cleaning up PFAS contamination at Washington sites under MTCA.

REVISION NOTES:

June 28, 2023: Published final guidance.
Dec 15, 2022-March 3, 2023: Draft for public comment. In January and February 2023, we extended the original comment period twice.
