Description The Department of Ecology’s Freshwater Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program (FFCMP) monitors toxic contaminants in freshwater fish statewide to inform public health, aquatic health, and environmental risk. In 2017, FFCMP collected samples from the Okanogan River watershed including Lake Osoyoos and Lake Pateros.

This report summarizes the 2017 results as well as trends in the Okanogan watershed over the last two decades. Contaminants discussed include PCB, mercury, DDT and other chlorinated pesticides, dioxins, and furans. We also compare results to environmental and health standards.

We found that DDT and PCB levels are declining in parts of the watershed while these levels remain unchanged in other parts. Despite some reductions, contaminant concentrations continue to be above environmental and health standards established by Ecology.
